Established in March of 2009, the GJBC brings together leaders in the utilities, energy efficiency, renewable energy and smart energy industries. The Governor's Office, the Texas Workforce Commission, educators and workforce development boards that are members of the recently formed Texas Green corridor Collaborative, have designated the GJBC as their bridge to the emerging clean energy industry and to provide the industry advice and feedback they need to know what curriculum to develop and what training initiatives to fund.
The IH-35 Corridor in central Texas, stretching from the Dallas Metroplex to San Antonio, is witnessing the emergence of a new economic engine built upon renewable energy and "green jobs" - the green economy. The emergence of a green economy represents tremendous potential for economic and job growth. This mega-region is already home to a number of initiatives from energy efficiency and conservation to alternative energy power generation and distribution.
Within this same region, a collaboration of educators and trainers, workforce development agencies and chambers of commerce has come together to strategically connect, aligh and leverage resources and efforts, respond to emerging business needs more effectively, and efficiently contribute to the development of a sustained regional green economy. The Texas Green Corridor Collaborative has selected the GJBC to serve as its advisory council, to act as a bridge between the education and training community and local workforce boards to the clean energy industry. The GJBC will provide a means by which each can obtain regular, consistent, and focused information describing business skill needs and hiring plans to support business-driven training and placement services, allowing them to plan and prepare the educated workforce required for the regional transition to a more sustainable economy, and to support the further evolution of technology and green business.
Participation on the Council provides organizations with the opportunity to shape future training activity in areas related to efficiency and renewable energy and conservation. Energy efficiency and renewable energy related businesses are among the few growth sectors in our ailing economy. Knowing the new employee skills required and projected hiring plans of businesses in this space will allow stakeholders to plan appropriately, supporting a common and consistent workforce training program that will provide a ready workforce that matches the needs of businesses in this emerging industry.
