The Newsletter of the Texas Foundation for Innovative Communities, October, 2009

The Year One Final Report was submitted to The Texas Workforce Commission on July 22nd, 2009 as a comprehensive look at the work that was accomplished during Year One of Wagner-Peyser funding.
To supplement our interviews and the general information from the avialable green jobs and workforce studies available, TFIC collaborated with Workforce Solutions Capital Area to develop and issue a survey of businesses active in the clean energy industry. The objectives of the survey were to identify training needs for new and existing employees with specific skills in demand, and projected hiring for 25 occupations related to energy efficiency and renewable energy.

TFIC commissioned the study, Texas Renewable Energy Industry and Workforce Development Assessment in 2008 to assess green workforce status across Texas, prepare related growth projections and ascertain training/development gaps. The report also identifies related training programs at the university and community college levels. Basic research was completed before September 2008; the final version of the report was deivered in January 2009. Using available labor data sources augmented by interviews with selected clean energy companies, it identified industry trends and strengths in each of the workforce development board districts in Texas, and identified actions that may be taken to improve linkages between business, education, and workforce resources.
